Sustainability
At Pelham Primary School, we believe that education goes beyond the classroom. Preparing children for the future means helping them understand and care for the world around them. That is why sustainability and climate education sit at the heart of our school vision.
The Department for Education has called on all education sectors to create a sustainability climate action plan to show how we, as a school community, can support national and international initiatives which are aimed at protecting the world through direct climate action. As a school, we have an important role to play in this, particularly reducing our environmental footprint to work towards net zero and giving all children, young people and adults the knowledge and skills to thrive in the green economy and to help restore nature.
It is our belief that every child can make a difference. Through our Climate Action Plan (2025–2028), we are working together as a community to reduce our environmental impact, build resilience to climate change, and inspire the next generation of global citizens.
Our Climate Action Plan is a commitment to action. Progress will be reviewed termly, celebrated annually, and refreshed every three years to ensure our approach remains ambitious and relevant.
Across our school, everyone has a part to play:
Pupils – leading campaigns like Switch-Off Week, acting as “Eco ambassadors,” and taking part in tree planting, gardening, and eco-projects.
Staff – weaving sustainability into lessons, modelling eco-friendly behaviours, and supporting initiatives such as active travel and waste reduction.
Families – joining in with uniform and book swaps, and helping children walk, cycle, or scoot to school.
Governors and Leadership – ensuring sustainability is at the centre of school decisions, from funding priorities to curriculum design.
We know that the most powerful change happens when everyone works together. By listening to pupils, families, and staff — and partnering with local and national organisations — Pelham Primary is building a culture of sustainability that goes beyond the school gates.
Together, we will help our children develop the knowledge, skills, and values to shape a greener, fairer future.
